Portland House

Although some may have dismissed it as a phase, craft beer is here to stay. Portland House, which describes itself as a ‘micro-bar’, has been serving craft beer, ales and plenty more since it opened four months ago on Ecclesall Road. Manager Tom Purcell told us more about Portland House and what to expect.

What can people expect from Portland House?

Portland House is Welbeck Abbey Brewery’s first bar. We have an exciting range of cask ales, which always includes three beers from Welbeck Abbey, along with three guest ales from various breweries from around the country. We also have a great range of spirits and wine, including 13 gins, which we source from our local supplier Starmore Boss. We have a simple aim, which is to serve great products to the best standards in a friendly atmosphere.

Where do you source your food and drink?

We use local suppliers. We work with Porter Brook Deli and Waterall Pork Butchers for our pork pies, cheese and olives. We use Starmore Boss for our changing spirits range and Sheffield wine merchants Le Bon Vin for our wines. Our hot drinks are provided by Sheffield’s Birdhouse Tea Company and Cafeology.

What can people expect when they come to Portland House?

A friendly welcome from our knowledgeable staff who are happy to advise and let customers try beers they may not have had before. Plus we have a great range of board games.

Craft beer seems to be all the rage at the moment. Why do you think this is?

The craft beer scene is made by people who have a passion for what they do, and it comes across in the beers they make. There are such a varied range of beers available that there is something for everyone these days. Gone are the days of cold, fizzy lager or John Smiths being the only options. It means more and more people are getting into beer and enjoying and trying local beers, which can only be a good thing.
