Advice for Artists: Part 8

It’d be naïve to think that being an artist is an easy career. The demanding workload, the struggle to make a name for yourself and always running out supplies, it can be a bloody nightmare.

At Now Then we’ve had some wonderful artists grace our front covers with their work over the years, and seeing as they’ve been there and done it we asked them the simple question, what advice would you give to other artists?

Here are some of the best responses we’ve received and now and again we’ll go through the catalogue, entertaining, inspiring and hopefully passing on words of true wisdom. Enjoy.

Now Then Issue 71: Beth Hoeckel, February 2014

“I wouldn’t say it’s that I wish I’d been told, more that I wish I had listened. Mostly simple things like ‘save your money’. I wish someone would have forced me to do that a long time ago. And things everyone hears like ‘be yourself’ and ‘follow your dreams’- as clichéd as those sound, they are true. But most people learn on their own terms, no matter how much advice they are given.”

“My dad once told me, ‘Do what makes you happy.’ I don’t wish I’d been told it earlier but I wish I’d acted on it sooner. My dad died five years ago and is my inspiration for all this. He never got to see me take this route, but it’s his influence that has inspired me to follow this path.”
