Cultural Varsity

Our next Word Life event is this Sunday at Sheffield Union. Word Life first started life in the Raynor Lounge. It’s been over 4 years since we last ran an event in the SU and we’re very happy to be back. We ran a poetry varsity slam last year, and this time around we’ve invited the improv comedy groups to do battle as well. More details below.

SHEF UNI vs HALLAM

It’s a tale as old as time. Sheffield University and Hallam students have been battling it out on sports fields, while uni-crossed lovers have caught eyes across the dancefloor of Corp only to be dragged off by their friends. Now the poets and improvisers are poking their heads above the battlements to slug it out in the first ever cultural varsity. Support your university team as they go head-to-head for cultural bragging rights.

MARK GRIST

He needs little introduction. This poet reached almost four million views for his Don’t Flop rap battle video, when his battle with teenage rapper Blizzard went viral. He’s performed at stages across the world since and is one of the most sucessful poets and battle rappers to emerge from the UK spoken word scene.

THE SHRIMPS vs ANTICS

Both of these improvised comedy troupes are well established, with regular gigs in Sheffield and elsewhere, runs at the Edinburgh festival and a host of alumni who have gone on to develop succesful careers in comedy. Now they face their greatest challenge – battling against their rivals from the other side of the city.

POETRY SLAM

Decidedly more raucous than your average poetry reading, with random judges picked from the audience, five poets from each uni go against each other with back-to-back performances in a poetry slam.
