Now Then presents Off The Shelf Festival Opening Party

It’s that time again – Off the Shelf is back, and Now Then has organised a night of good old rollocking fun to celebrate.

When: Sunday 10th October, 7pm
Where: The Forum, Devonshire Street
Price: Donations on the door
Line Up:

Mean Poppa Lean
Mean Poppa Lean are a force of nature. No better way to start a month long party than with the way you mean to carry on. They helped us raise some money for Peace in the Park back in June, and anyone there can testify how much fun this band is. Having since completed a busy summer on the festival circuit, they’re back, hot pants in hand, to ply their funky antics all over the steel city. One of the best live shows we’ve ever seen. We’re sure you’ll agree.

“Like the Chili Peppers with Faith No More’s Mike Patton on vocals, with maybe some Foals and some Friendly Fires thrown in for more contemporary measure, this is clearly a band on the cusp of national arena adoration.”

John Fairhurst

John played our folk and blues session back in May, and given the opportunity we had to invite him back. One of our favourite perfomers, With a bottle-neck style blues referencing the likes of Son House and Bukka White, comparisons to the fingerpicking of John Fahey, a leaning towards the psychedelic 60’s rock of Hendrix and Captain Beefheart and the ever present influence of sarod master K. Sridhar and Indian raga, John’s music is a real melting-pot of diverse musical traditions.

” John Fairhurst is worth every bit of praise he’s already garnered. Capable of creating jaw-dropping moments live, he is possibly the finest guitarist you’ll ever see – and even better than that he is able to couple those skills with brilliant songwriting and a gravel-swilled belter of a voice. Search him out and prepare to be stunned.” (Chris Long – BBC Manchester)

Winner of slams including the Cheltenham Science Festival Slam and City of Culture Slam, and New Writing North’s Andrew Waterhouse Award.
